It’s the start of a brand New Year and most civilians are still shaking off their Hogmanay hangovers, yet for clubbers one weekend is already down and there are plenty more to be getting on with. At most of Edinburgh’s most popular venues the usual residents’ nights apply, although Sneaky Pete’s are getting their guests in early.
In Deep with Medlar – Sneaky Pete’s, Fri Jan 9
The first major club guest of 2015 hits Edinburgh at the same time as In Deep, Sneaky’s usual residency of eclectic talents from near and wide, begins a new season. This time out Ned Peglar (pictured), also known as Medlar and as 2-step producer Klic, will be landing in the small but sweaty bar with a jackin’ sound which draws capably from various sources. As anyone who heard his deeply eclectic 'Sleep' LP on Wolf Music last year will attest, jazz and ambient chill-out aren’t beyond him, but in a club expect a more upbeat fusion of classic Chicago house mixed up with stark garage beats to bleed through.
Four Corners – The Bongo Club, Fri Jan 9
Keeping alive the strong current of funk, soul and jazz which has been an integral part of Edinburgh’s clubbing scene since the late ‘90s, Four Corners is a Bongo Club residency from some of the most established genre DJs in the city. From his former Big Beat night onwards, the intensely knowledgeable Simon Hodge is renowned, while his fellow residents Chris Astrojazz and Johnny Cashback add afro, latin and dub reggae styles to the mix.
Teesh with Semi Deluxe – Sneaky Pete’s, Sat Jan 10
Resident DJ Cheers’ monthly guest night returns for another of Edinburgh’s first guest parties of 2015. Used to bringing an eclectic range of talents, from old timers to brand new Ds and producers, this month’s outing will see Semi Deluxe, one half of the team behind London DJ and promotion outfit Crucial & Fresh, arrive for a set of electro and house with a sleek ‘80s vibe.
