Cramped club and gig venue in the basement of an old church, hosting indie discos, well-known house DJs and live bands

What was once just another decent mid-level venue on the circuit has been getting a little extra love from Edinburgh folk in recent years, following a fire in the restaurant above that left it badly damaged in 2008. Rather impressively, the owner had the entire club gutted and then rebuilt almost exactly to the original specification for reopening in 2010, and it’s been going strong ever since.

Housing just a few hundred across the main dancefloor and the balcony above, the Liquid Room is a dark box housed in the basement of a nineteenth century church on Victoria Street, one of the narrow roads that join the high and low levels of the city’s Old Town. Its diverse clubbing menu incorporates indie and retro nights at one end of the spectrum and high-profile house nights with big-name international touring guests at the other, while it can also host smaller-scale club parties in its recently added new extension to the rear of the building, the Annexe.

As a gig venue, the Liquid Room is also one of Edinburgh’s busiest, with a slew of recognisable international acts having played on its stage in the early stages of their careers since it opened in 1997, including Calvin Harris, Kasabian, Snow Patrol and Vampire Weekend. Gig-goers are advised to get there early, because you want to be standing at the edge of the balcony for an unrestricted view.
