Atmospheric venue welcoming big-name DJs and local bands every night of the week. There’s also a daytime café selling well-priced pizzas
One of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric venues enjoys a location like no other, hewn out of a series of man-made brick arches underneath the city’s famous Old Town. Mere feet from the venue tour parties wind their way through darkened catacombs and hear about those who lived in horrific poverty in damp, unventilated basements, but in ‘Cab Vol’ – as the locals call it – it feels like the future. Across two arched dancefloors, one large and one small, state of the art sound systems play a forward-thinking blend of house, techno and bass seven nights a week.
The repertoire of weekly and monthly residencies is switched up every few months to keep things fresh, but it generally follows a format of cheaper or free entry residents’ nights earlier in the week, with larger fees at the weekend. Yet this venue has always made a feature of welcoming big name DJ guests midweek as well as at the weekend, meaning some exceptional parties for the student crowd and those who can stay up late on a school night.
Although it’s a more than capable live venue, larger touring bands have been few and far between at Cab of late, with a healthy procession of local live acts on the roster. While the downstairs rooms are where the late night action happens, the ground-level Café Voltaire is a popular hangout earlier in the day, offering reasonable pizzas on two-for-one offers, cocktails and good quality drinks in darkened and fashionably distressed surroundings. Booths and tables on both levels are bookable, with gaming tables available in the café booths upstairs.
