More than just a boutique hotel, Rubinstein – in the Kazimierz district in Krakow – pays homage to the Jewish neighbourhood that surrounds it. The country’s oldest synagogue sits across the street, antique furniture hints to the 19th century and the name honors local cosmetics entrepreneur, Helena Rubinstein. While modern features have naturally snuck their way in – artwork painted by the owner, the sky bar overlooking the city and the sophisticated downstairs restaurant, you still feel overwhelmingly that you are living and breathing Kazimierz past.
Why stay at Rubinstein Hotel?
If you prefer old-fashioned interiors with a touch of modern, then Rubinstein is the place to go. A 15th century townhouse turned hotel, the building has been renovated to show off its original elements. Genuine wall paintings, timber beams and a rediscovered 15th century column transport you through time. Staying here felt as educational as it did relaxing, with framed newspaper articles and portraits of Helena Rubinstein lining the walls. Being on Szeroka Street where Schindler’s List was filmed, I felt truly immersed in Krakow’s history which tied in well with many of the WW2-focused attractions I visited.
What are the rooms like at Rubinstein Hotel?
My exclusive suite, like the rest of the hotel, featured original foundations of the building with exposed brickwork archways and a timber beam ceiling. A big white bed stood in the centre of the room and the warm wall lighting created a cosy atmosphere. Of course, all the modern amenities were included; two flat screen TVs, coffee machine and kettle, fridge, desk and even a separate living room that was styled with a classic 19th century velvet sofa, neoclassical armchairs and an elegant wooden coffee table. The bathroom had a beige marble finish and – unfortunately the plug didn’t shut so I couldn’t have a bath – and was equipped with the usual bath robe and slippers, toiletries and vanity kits. Thick windows blocked most of the sound from Szeroka Street, making my room feel like a haven amongst the tourist buzz below.
Room choices vary between economy, deluxe, exclusive and one superior deluxe suite, some of which have a modern style. The first floor apartment even has a conference room and cigar cabinet for business meetings.
Which are the best restaurants and bars at Rubinstein Hotel?
The Sky Bar is a highlight of the hotel. While the decor was fairly basic – 12 tables with patio chairs and plants lining the edge – the expansive view of the city, including the Basilica, St. Joseph’s Church and the Balon Widokowy (tethered hot air balloon) made for the perfect sunset drink. The menu had all the usuals plus some signature cocktails. I really enjoyed the Helena Rubinstein which was served in a classic carved glass and tasted sweet and creamy with a coconut twang.
Rubinstein also has a tasteful downstairs restaurant with mood lighting, more exposed brickwork and outdoor seating. The classy menu serves up classic dishes including duck – a very popular meat in Poland – as well as pastas, burgers and soups. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to eat there but the duck and salmon come highly recommended by the staff.
Breakfast is also served in the restaurant and includes an option of egg and sausage dishes, plus a buffet of all the usuals; fruit, pastries, cereals and cold plates. The cold herring from the buffet was a highlight.
What is the service like at Rubinstein Hotel?
The staff were as you would expect for a four-star hotel, very welcoming, polite and ready to answer any questions. At the bar, they were always smiling and offering drinks recommendations, and the restaurant waiter was particularly friendly, engaging in a long chat about the hotel. I had no teabags in my room upon arrival but, after asking at reception, housekeeping was at my door within minutes. The efficient, attentive service made for a very positive experience.
What are the facilities like at Rubinstein Hotel?
The hotel aims to facilitate relaxation into their stay, with a small sauna on the third floor that is available for private use and a treatment menu in the rooms directing guests to a nearby massage parlour. On the basement level, there is an event space that accommodates weddings, parties and business meetings. Featuring a curved ceiling and walls of more exposed brickwork, this space feels like a stylish cellar and would be perfect for an intimate event.
What’s the area like around the Rubinstein Hotel?
The Kazimierz district, also known as the Jewish Quarter, is a popular neighbourhood for visitors to Krakow. From my bedroom window I could see the Old Synagogue and had a lovely view of Szeroka Street, which feels more like a piazza with the abundance of alfresco restaurants. Buggies offer driving tours and pick up tourists right outside the hotel, which may or may not be a plus depending on what you are looking for.
This is arguably the best area to stay in Krakow – quiet and old towny but with plenty of trendy bars and restaurants. I highly recommend a drink at Eszeweria for its shabby chic interior and tree-enclosed garden. For food, there are endless options: just around the corner is the Michelin-recommended Karacter which offers laidback, high quality dining. Next to Rubinstein is Once Upon A Time, a traditional Jewish restaurant serving up authentic dishes to the sounds of live Klezmer music.
