Jyväskylä Harbour comes back to life once again as people are able to head out onto the ice and the harbour cafés reopen.

The ice on Lake Jyväsjärvi is a popular outdoor spot, perfect for enjoying winter days by skating, skiing, walking or kick-sledding. The smaller loop of the annually cleared long-distance skating trail opened to the public on Wednesday January 21, and the harbour cafés will reopen over the weekend.
At the harbour café, you can rent skates and kick sleds at weekends. Snacks, sweet treats and hot drinks are available not only at the Harbour Café but also at the atmospheric Kota Café on Lutakonaukio. On the café’s opening day, there will also be some programme on offer.
The long-distance skating trail is usually cleared sometime between January and February, depending on weather conditions. Maintenance of the skating trail is handled by the City of Jyväskylä’s sports services. Moving on the ice is always at your own risk, however, and weak ice should be avoided.
At the moment, the ice surface is rough in places and the full skating trail has not yet been completed. There is also not enough snow yet to prepare cross-country ski tracks. When conditions allow, a longer skating trail of around three kilometres and ski tracks will also be created.
The trail is primarily intended for skaters. Other forms of movement are allowed as long as they do not interfere with skating. The direction of travel is anticlockwise, and different skating styles have their own lanes: skating with poles takes place on the right-hand side, hockey and figure skating on the left, and touring and speed skating in the middle of the track.
