Walking is such an ordinary part of life that we rarely pay much attention to it. Yet everyone has their own way of moving: one person marches purposefully, another wanders with no destination in mind. Sometimes walking can feel like dancing, at other times it is a struggle against wind, rain or difficult terrain.
Opening at Serlachius Headquarters in Mänttä on September 26, the exhibition Jalan puts this everyday act of walking under the spotlight. Combining artistic and scientific perspectives, the exhibition looks at walking from the nineteenth century to the present day.
The works in the exhibition show people walking to work and in their free time, alone and together, and through different seasons and stages of life. On display are paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and videos by some of Finland’s best-loved artists, including Golden Age masters Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt and Hugo Simberg, as well as acclaimed contemporary photographer and video artist Elina Brotherus.
International names include British land art pioneer Richard Long, whose practice has centred on walking for decades, Belgian-born, Mexico City-based artist Francis Alÿs, known for using walking to explore social and political spaces, and Turner Prize-winning British artist Mark Wallinger.
The exhibition is based on Serlachius’s own art collection, complemented by works on loan from other museums and contemporary artists.
While you’re there, it’s also worth visiting Mänttä’s main Serlachius site, Serlachius Manor, where an exhibition by contemporary artist Anish Kapoor is on show until April 2027.
