As European Capital of Culture in 2026, Oulu is turning the volume up on culture, filling the year with events that demand attention.

Culture is for everyone, which is why we’ve rounded up a wide mix of events for people interested in all kinds of things. One person might want to try air guitar, another to head to a photography exhibition, a third to hit up a sauna festival and someone else might want to do all of the above.

The events on this list are close to the city centre and easy to get to. Many are just a short walk away, but cycling is also a great option, as Oulu is known as the cycling capital of the north.

We’ve brought together established cornerstones of the city’s cultural calendar, new local favourites and special one-off events taking place only during the Capital of Culture year. You don’t need a big budget to get involved either, as the list includes plenty of free events.

Marvel at world-class air guitar on Rotuaari

If everyone in the world played air guitar, we would achieve world peace. That’s the core philosophy of the Air Guitar World Championships. Originally conceived as a side event for the Oulu Music Video Festival, it has grown into a global phenomenon followed by millions of people. In late August, skilled air guitarists from around the world arrive in Oulu to meet each other and battle it out for the world championship title. During the event week, the Dark Horses Qualifier gives newer air guitarists the chance to advance straight to the final showdown. In the competition, performers aim to impress the jury with a one-minute performance, and the winner is rewarded with a real, Finnish-made guitar. The whole event culminates in a mass air guitar moment for everyone, naturally in the name of world peace.

Location: Rotuaari
Expect to pay: The price of an air guitar
When: 27 August Dark Horses Qualifier, 28–29 August World Championship Final

Step inside a theatre performance at Raksila market halls

‘Faravid’s Land’ is an immersive performance combining theatre, contemporary circus and dance. Immersive means that the audience can move freely within the performance, choose which actor or scene to follow and, in some cases, even take part in the action. This means that every performance is different, based simply on the route each viewer chooses. The stage is an old market building in Raksila, where the story follows a search for the source of happiness among the people of Oulu. This is the second immersive work co-produced by Oulu Theatre and Flow Productions, and having seen the first, I can recommend the immersive theatre experience to everyone.

Location: Raksila market, Tehtaankatu 1
Expect to pay: Standard ticket €48, pensioner ticket €45, concession ticket €32
When: Performance season 26 August–17 September

Both the venue and the festival ooze DIY spirit, and while the music is on the heavier side, the crowd is warm-hearted and welcoming.
