The ski resort of Courchevel 1850 is well-known for its glamour. Arriving here is an experience in itself: the region is made up of six villages, all backed by glistening slopes and stacked with designer shops. The winding drive past snow-frosted pines sets the scene for your arrival into a proper winter wonderland: Hotel Barrière Les Neiges, a 42-room chalet-style ski-in, ski-out hotel that literally twinkles from the slopes. You can expect an assembly of staff to welcome you as the signature roaring fire (shaped like Helios’ mouth) warms your bones from the snowy climes.
Les Neiges boasts exceptional comfort and luxury, underscored by plenty of authentic alpine touches. There’s a range of rooms and suites to choose from, but the Prestige Junior Suite on the fifth floor is surely the best. Succumb to views of the snowy peaks from your various balconies, and sink into the mountain charm: I’m talking faux-furs, plush velvet pillows and cosy wooden chalet panelling. A Hammam shower and jacuzzi bath offers some god-tier post-ski pampering, too. Try (and fail) to resist the plush mini-bar – you could rack up quite a bill on options such as truffle crisps, champagne and negronis.
The main event, though – other than the snowsports – is brand-new restaurant Loulou. Decor is celebratory of Savoyard culture, with plenty of local woodwork, curved seats and plush throws, plus views over the snow-covered Bellecôte ski-run. Outside, there’s mellow, vibey beats from a resident DJ and a lovely sun-drenched terrace. As for the food, Loulou is all about sharing, and with emblematic dishes from the Piedmont and Lombardy regions, it’s hard not to order the whole menu. I opted for scallops, french fries and broccoli drenched in butter (twice, actually, because it was so good). A colossal dessert buffet offers every sweet treat under the sun – mousse, pavlova, profiteroles, the list goes on – so try to save some room, if you can.
It’s all about the details here – look out for little treats in your room, including hand cream and lip balm thoughtfully placed by your bed to moisturise mountain air skin. Oh, and you’ll get used to the heated loo seat (which also lights up and opens and closes on its own accord).
