The area around Helsinki’s much-loved Havis Amanda statue, known as Manta, transforms into a festive meeting place as Manta’s Christmas Market fills the square from 5 December to 6 January. Held for the first time, the market brings atmosphere, flavours and a full programme to the edge of Kauppatori throughout the season. It’s open every day from 11.00 to 19.00.
There are 12 huts offering everything from traditional rice porridge to new taste surprises: soups served in bread, pizzas seasoned with Finnish Christmas spices and mulled wine with a Japanese twist. The cafés and restaurants have a total of 500 seats, so it’s worth coming with an appetite.
At the heart of the market is the Christmas pavilion, which serves as both a meeting place and a stage for small performances. Food and programme are provided by Alkuviini, which delighted visitors at Hakaniemi Market last summer. They’re bringing along an impressive grill and natural mulled wine from the South of France.
The programme includes Independence Day celebrations, traditional Boxing Day dances, workshops, DJ sets and New Year’s Eve parties. One of the huts, Manta’s Kiska, focuses on charity – hosting organisations, school classes and sports clubs raising funds. And yes, the statue herself will be crowned with a beautiful spruce wreath.
Havis Amanda is an iconic city symbol and a traditional place for celebrations and gatherings.
