There is now an even better reason to visit Kruunuvuorenranta in Laajasalo. Inside former Oil Silo 468, Tyyni creates an imaginary Bedouin camp amid desert dunes. The work draws on the similarity between the Finnish words dyyni (‘dune’) and tyyni (‘calm’), exploring the meanings that emerge when the two are brought together.
At times, the soundscape swells into a sandstorm. Then the storm subsides, and calm returns.
The installation mirrors the human mind, where thoughts and emotions rise and fall. The dune landscape always settles back into stillness, the sand falling into place as if nothing had happened. Eventually, our emotional storms pass too.
The seagulls circling outside the silo add an unscripted layer to the experience, their cries occasionally blending into the soundscape. Jonathan Livingston Seagull would surely have approved.
Visitors are encouraged to stretch out on the cushions, imagine a campfire glowing before them and surrender to the world of Tyyni.
The installation is impressive, but so is Oil Silo 468 itself. Its immense height and singular atmosphere make it an exceptional setting for art - one that deserves to host exhibitions far more often.
The silo has enormous potential to become one of Helsinki’s most distinctive attractions, alongside the Kruunuvuori Bridge and Laajasalo’s natural sights.
You can get there from central Helsinki either across the striking Kruunuvuori Bridge or by ferry from the Meritullintori pier in Kruununhaka.
