Forget the idea that you need to be an art expert to visit a gallery – they’re open to everyone and, best of all, completely free. Many are worth a visit for their beautiful spaces alone. So why not spend an inspiring day gallery-hopping around Helsinki, or simply step inside any art space you happen to pass by?
‘In Helsinki, galleries are low-threshold places where anyone can pop in, even while running errands,’ says visual artist Konsta Koivisto, adding that you can browse just as freely as you would in a shop – there’s no pressure to buy anything.
‘But if you fall in love with a piece and take it home, that’s a definite bonus,’ Koivisto smiles.
Award-winning artist Man Yau describes Helsinki’s art scene as exceptionally high-quality: ‘I’m so proud of the work my fellow artists are creating. It’s wonderful that so many new galleries run by young artists have opened recently.’
Traditionally, galleries have clustered in the city centre, especially around Vanha Kirkkopuisto (known to locals as Ruttopuisto). These days, however, Helsinki’s art scene is shifting eastwards – to Kallio, Sörnäinen, Vallila and Kalasatama.
Most galleries are closed on Mondays, and some on Tuesdays too. A few don’t keep regular opening hours at all.
