What’s on this month? No worries – we’ve once again rounded up the best tips for you.

May brings thought-provoking exhibitions, high-energy music events and all kinds of cultural happenings. The month also includes much-loved traditions and celebrations, from Mother’s Day to the cherry blossom festival, hanami, as well as neighbourhood street parties across the city.

As spring progresses, more and more activities move outdoors: May sees the opening of outdoor swimming pools and the return of many kiosk cafés.

What's happening in Helsinki this May

1.5. Vappu events and brunches across the city

Across Helsinki, Vappu brings events to every corner of the city, whether you’re heading for a picnic in Kaivopuisto, a brunch or lunch, a concert or a night of dancing. Many kiosk cafés also reopen for the celebrations: at the Käpylä kiosk, for example, the opening day is packed with activity, including a sima-making competition.

On Vappu, brunch and lunch tables are laid out in restaurants on nearly every block as well as in Helsinki’s manor houses. As evening falls, you’ll find Vappu dances at venues such as Korjaamo.

2.5. Guided island tour, Harakka

How well do you know the islands off Helsinki’s coast? On the nature centre’s guided island tour, you’ll get to explore Harakka’s natural surroundings and pick up tips on observing island wildlife.

The tour (in Finnish) is free of charge and lasts one hour. No registration is required. The island can be reached by a ferry departing from Ullanlinnanlaituri. The tour starts in front of the nature centre at 13.

3.5. Hakaniemi Farmers’ Market, Hakaniementori

The ingredients of a perfect Sunday: a leisurely stroll and market coffee in the lively buzz, plus of course some treats from small producers to take home. The Hakaniemi farmers’ market is held on the first Sunday of every month. At the market, you’ll find products grown and made by numerous vendors themselves. There are also artisans and street food vendors on site.

Free entry. The market runs on Sunday from 10–16.

5.5. Tuesday Jazz, Bar Favela

At Bar Favela in Töölö, a monthly jazz night curated by Mikko Innanen has been bringing the jams since 2015. On Tuesday May 5, the line-up features Matthieu Metzger (saxophone), Paul Brousseau (keyboards) and Mikko Innanen (saxophones).

Free entry. Music starts at 19 and finishes at 21.

8.5. Asla Jo's album launch, Tavastia

Singer-songwriter Asla Jo has emerged as a notable name on Finland’s indie scene in recent years. Her debut album Papin tytär explores youth, loneliness and a longing for love. Asla Jo has described the record as a tender ode to solitude as well as an autofictional coming-of-age story. The tour, which began earlier this year, comes to a close at Tavastia in Helsinki on May 8 2026.

9.5. TIME4TATS, Ääniwalli

GetMoreTats brings its Time4Tats concept to Ääniwalli in Helsinki, where the tattoo event expands into music over the course of the day. Around 25 tattoo artists will be taking part. You can book appointments in advance, and ready-made flash designs will also be available. You can browse the artists beforehand via the organiser’s website or app. The concept combines spontaneous tattoos with pre-booked sessions in one event. As the evening goes on, the atmosphere shifts into a more club-like vibe with live music and electronic sets.

10.5. Wings for Life World Run, Töölönlahti

Wings for Life World Run is once again being run simultaneously around the world. In Finland, the event takes place around Töölönlahti in Helsinki at 14. The event combines exercise with charity, aiming to support the treatment and rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries. It is open to participants of all levels.

11.5. ‘Diary of a Food Courier’ exhibition, Hotel and Restaurant Museum

‘Diary of a Food Courier’ exhibition explores the work of food couriers, its realities and everyday life, as well as a form of labour that has reshaped the restaurant industry, where the traditional employer–employee relationship has become blurred. The timely exhibition is based on documentation of food courier work carried out between 2024 and 2025. ‘Diary of a Food Courier’ is on display at the Hotel and Restaurant Museum until May 17.

Tickets: adults €16, concessions €6.

12.5. Lunch concert: UMO Helsinki Ensemble – Latin Jazz, Savoy Theatre

Savoy Theatre and the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s popular lunch concerts continue this spring. Latin jazz is a musical dialogue between continents: upbeat, energetic and made for dancing. The jazz lunch can be booked via the Savoy Theatre box office or the Lippu.fi online store. The concert is part of UMO’s 50th anniversary programme.

The one-hour concert is free to attend, but a ticket is required. Please arrive in good time.

14.5. Hanami celebration, Roihuvuori Cherry Blossom Park

At Roihuvuori Cherry Blossom Park, the annual hanami celebration marks the blooming of the cherry trees. The programme includes parapara and butoh dance performances, origami workshops, calligraphy, tea culture, budo demonstrations and koto music. Japanese treats will also be on sale in the park. The celebration traditionally also crowns the Cherry Blossom Princess of the year. The event is organised by the Roihuvuori Society together with Japanese cultural associations in Finland.

The hanami celebration is a free, open-air event. It runs from 12–18.
