Fresh Arts says
THE CITY OF HOUSTON IS IN THE MIDST OF DRAFTING THE FIRST ARTS & CULTURE PLAN SINCE 1993. SINCE WE BELIEVE OUR CITY'S ARTISTS SHOULD BE AT THE CENTER OF ANY CULTURAL PLAN, WE'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU.

The focus of this Artist Town Hall is to discuss the growing needs of Houston's independent artists in the context of the official cultural planning process. Though the needs of independent artists are diverse, our goal is to clarify and prioritize some of the most pressing needs for our independent artist community in an effort to better advocate for their consideration in the plan.

The Town Hall format will be interactive, offering multiple opportunities for participants to offer input and ask questions.

At last year's Artist Town Hall at the Eldorado Ballroom and in countless artist-driven gatherings since, some popular themes have been:
* Greater city support for independent artists
* Increased public art opportunities for local artists
* Better artist representation on funding and selection panels
* Organizing / artist unions
* Affordable live/work spaces
* Aggregated resources & information sharing
* Better awareness of existing resources
* Increased efforts towards talent retention
* Artist compensation
* Greater representation of local artists in highest profile arts institutions
* Greater inclusion of & equitable access for diverse artists
* More interdisciplinary communication and collaboration
* Better access to healthcare and health insurance

THE LOOSE AGENDA OF THIS ARTIST TOWN HALL WILL BE:
* A brief state of the union and update on cultural plan progress
* An open discussion of artist needs (using the above themes as a guide)
* An exercise in prioritizing our needs and clarifying our desired outcomes, which will be communicated directly to the cultural plan consultants and advisory committee
* An open question and answer forum
