Preservation Houston says
Join Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, Preservation Houston and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Harris County Domed Stadium, better known as the Astrodome, during free, fun birthday festivities on Thursday, April 9, a half-century to the day after the Dome's grand opening in 1965.

There'll be free cake and "Dome Dogs," souvenirs and — the best part — a chance to head into the Dome itself between 7 and 8 p.m.

The party's free and open to the public. Enter NRG Park via Gate 10 at Kirby and McNee for free parking in the Red Lot starting at 5:30 p.m. The festivities will be at Carruth Plaza on the west side of the Astrodome. (The pedestrian gate nearest the MetroRail station on the east side of NRG Park will also be open for those arriving by train.)
