WHAT IS DOCUMENTARY THEATER?
Documentary Theater is theater that wholly or in part uses documentary material (such as newspapers, government reports, interviews, etc.) as source material; for the script, ideally without altering its wording. In CLASS ONE the students will; read several Documentary Theater plays, learn interviewing techniques, learn researching skills, conduct real interviews with Houstonians on grace and also on topics about the anti-Muslim sentiment, learn how to write outlines for Documentary Theater, learn editing techniques. In CLASS TWO, we will continue where Class One left off and the class will finish with a live reading of a rough-draft of Dialogues on Grace.

The reason why we are sharing the opportunity to be a part of this Community Outreach Program is that when Cressandra Thibodeaux began to interview numerous people on grace, she found the experience to be life-changing, and felt the need to share the experience. Dialogues on Grace is not so much about the end performance as it is about the process of getting there through thoughtful interactions with our community. We promise it to be an enriching experience for all.

CLASS ONE and CLASS TWO will each consist of four meetings. Each class (4 meetings each) costs $200 for non-members and $150 for 14 Pews members.

WHAT IS DIALOGUES ON GRACE?
Inspired by the anti-Muslim sentiment in our country, 14 Pews is producing, Dialogues on Grace, a 75-minute Documentary Theater Play. Source material for this insightful theatrical production comes from news articles and interviews of over 50 Houstonians of all faiths, asking their views on grace; what it means, what it looks like, could one have grace without subscribing to a religion, and an example of grace. In addition, we will also cover topics about the anti-Muslim sentiment; what it means, what it looks like, and examples of this very current issue. The goal of Dialogues on Grace is to celebrate our similarities, while recognizing and accepting our differences. Like most Documentary Theater, Dialogues on Grace is attempting to bridge art and politics while being a catalyst for social change.
