Asia Society Texas Center says
Remarkably preserved in the Silk Road desert, Dunhuang’s grottoes have astounded visitors for nearly 17 centuries. Merchants, officials, and aristocrats enshrined Buddhist culture through commissioned art in Dunhuang’s caves.

In 2016, the Getty Center will present the first major U.S. exhibition on Dunhuang’s Buddhist grottoes. In this unique program, Mimi Gates, Director Emerita of Seattle Art Museum and chairman of the Dunhuang Foundation, will discuss the intricate process of conveying the beauty and spirituality of the caves’ many devotional images. Fan Jinshi, Director Emerita of the Dunhuang Academy, joins Dr. Gates to present about conservation issues facing the caves.
