As part of A View Within: Works by Paula Chung and Karen Rips, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is pleased to invite you to The Power of Healing through Art, an evening of performance, presentation and discussion about art therapy and its effects on the body and mind. At the beginning of this exhibition, fiber artists, Paula Chung and Karen Rips spoke about how their artwork has become a form of catharsis for many of the medical imaging contributors, often allowing them to open up and speak about their illnesses, some for the first time. Art therapy is a form of emotional support that can be helpful to people who are struggling with difficult and challenging situations.

To start the evening, dance artist Jennifer Mabus and sound artist and collaborator Lynn Lane will present fading..., a multimedia sound and dance performance about Alzheimer’s disease. In this piece, Mabus was inspired by a family member’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. By abstracting the idea of memory and identity through sound and dance performance, Mabus and Lane create a physical experience of loss to understand the challenges that one encounters with this disease.

Camilo Gonzales, Media Arts Education Manager at Aurora Picture Show, will introduce the Arts In Medicine Program at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, a program he has been involved with for the past 2 years. Gonzales will present a short digital film, a collaboration with pediatric patients who created drawings which Gonzales then collages together and digitally animates to a musical score by Aishu Venkataraman.

A panel discussion with Q+A will follow including Jennifer Mabus, Lynn Lane, and Camilo Gonzales.
