HOUSTON TO GALVESTON #17 - SUMMER EXPRESS EDITION

EXPRESS! That means no lunch stop at The Spot. The summer edition can get pretty warm so we set up a supported stop on the Sea Wall for a quick stop. The supported stop will work on a suggested $5 donation. If you want to give more please do. The funds go toward the volunteers Bike Around the Bay fundraising.

PLEASE REVIEW THE ROUTE. AT NO POINT WILL YOU EVER BE ON HWY45 EXCEPT THE CAUSEWAY'S 12' WIDE SHOULDER. Focus especialy on the Hitchcock Exit at the end of HWY 3.

ROLL OUT 6:30AM SHARP
This is a bike ride from Downtown Houston to Galveston and back to Houston. Market Square to "The Spot" on Galveston Island. We will be doing lunch at "The Spot" on Seawall. After Lunch we return to Market Square in downtown Houston.

Please be sure your equipment can make this ride and that you are in shape to make this ride. We highly recommend the use of helmets. Please do not bring sound systems if you intend on riding with the faster groups. Pace lines at over 20 mph require serious focus and we audible hazard warnings.

PREPARATIONS FOR THE RIDE:
1) Choose a group that fits your ability. Remember it's 108 miles round trip so choose wisely.
A: 20-24mph
B: 17-20mph
C: 14-17mph
2) We have seen road bikes, mountain bikes, fat bikes and fixed gear bikes do this ride but usually mountain bikeshit the island a good 1-2 hours behind. It's safer to bring a faster bike as you will be in a cluster of other cyclists.
3) There will be 2 or 3 stops along each direction.
4) Please have a contignecy plan for someone to pick you up if your bike disintegrates during the ride and you cannot continue.
5) We will not leave anyone for minor bike repairs (flats, adjustments, etc)
6) There are people who make the ride (and back) on fixies so if that’s you thing then bring it
7) There are people who made the ride there on a mountain bike but they showed up in Galveston 1.5 hours behind the rest of the group
8) We have not seen anyone make it more than half way on a Huffy or other such bike. We're not saying you can't do it, just saying it's may be a lot of extra work
9) We will get to Galveston at 10:30 - 11:00am and have early lunch. Then either ride back, get picked up, or stay for the night, it's up to you. Most of the group will ride back.
10) We highly recommend the use of helmets for the Houston to Galveston Ride.
11) Do not bring sound systems or headphones if you intend on riding in the faster groups. Serious focus is required in pace lines. We audible commands and upcoming hazards.
12) If you have a major equipment fail before our first stop, please find your own way home. We have limited SAG and it is intended for issues closer to Galveston, the return or for people who can not complete the ride due to fatigue etc..
