Mary Cutrufello

Mary Cutrufello, back at Rudz, with band in tow!

Mary Cutrufello swam against the tide, moving from Austin to Houston in 1993. Once she hit the 713, she helped define the living sound of Space City honky-tonk in that somewhat quiescent decade. Currently living in St. Paul, MN, the whiskey-throated songwriter/singer/guitar-slinger returns to Rudyard's, her old stomping grounds, for a special show promoting her new album "Faithless World."

"It's special 'cause it's early, and it's early 'cause we're all old now!" she says. "But we can rock, or twang, at any hour, really. It's what we do. I'm really proud of this record, and I'm totally stoked to be bringing a crackerjack band to Texas for a full run for the first time in several years."

The new album is called "Faithless World," and like the bulk of Cutrufello's work, it explores classic themes of desire and regret, long miles and bad decisions. “It's my usual rockin' through the darkness,” Cutrufello says with a smile. “Almost all of the songs involve either a loss of faith or a betrayal of faith or some sort of relationship with faith that's a little bit fraught. By now, I think people know to expect that from me."

But at the same time, it's also a top-down, rollicking, Texas-style rockin' country record. A joyous romp through fifty years of guitar tones, from Gretsches and Rickenbackers to Strats and Mary's trademark Telecasters. The songs dart and bound, twist and twang and, well, rock. They're redemptive, played with desperation and joy in equal measure. Mary sings with authority and vulnerability, like the rock star she almost was, and the hardy, knowing soul she's become.

People know to expect that from her, too.
