Michelle Rawlings "Impressionist Paintings" Fri, Mar 20, 2015 - Sat, Apr 18, 2015 Opening reception: Friday, March 20, 7:00 - 10:00pm Hello Project Gallery is pleased to present Impressionist Paintings from Michelle Rawlings in her first solo gallery exhibition. In "Impressionist Paintings" Rawlings' depicts digital glitches which transformed once pristine images of her own paintings on her computer screen into a digital collapse of color and form. The abrupt and ephemeral nature of the glitch became an entry point for her to explore and re-investigate Impressionism. "One could say that the new landscape of our consciousness is a screen. But the screen can sometimes interpret itself in erroneous ways, guided by a hidden logic. Spontaneous abstractions within this scenario become like painterly interpretations of this landscape, displaying a fundamental property of the illusion, the ruptures that reveal a life behind the assumed perfection of representation. Each fissure lasts for semi-seconds before self correcting, making these images feel comparable to the ephemeral sensibility of impressionism but in this case the light is digital and the speed of its transformation is infinitely greater- as each fissure forms it is already moving in a liquid-like state of collapse." Rawlings was born in 1980 in Dallas, TX., received a BA from Pepperdine University in 2003, she studied art history and painting in Rome in 2004 and received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from the School of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 2006. She was an artist-in-residence at Cite Internationale Universitaire de Paris, CiteCulture, Paris, France in 2007. Rawlings received her MFA in Painting with Honors from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. She was in the inaugural exhibition, Summer Party, at Hello Project and was the FEATURE artist at the Goss-Michael Foundation in 2014. -- For more information please contact the gallery at: info@helloprojectgallery.com
