Menil Collection says
Designed by the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee, the Menil Drawing Institute (MDI) will be the first freestanding facility in the United States created especially for the exhibition, study, storage, and conservation of modern and contemporary drawings.

Sketches and drawings—intimate and immediate, reflecting the artist's hand—have been a quiet but key part of the Menil, starting with Old Masters. Today, Modern and Contemporary works on paper in all media—including pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, and gouache—are the fastest growing part of the collection, a roster that includes Paul Cezanne, Lee Bontecou, Marlene Dumas, Suzan Frecon, Robert Gober, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Mangold, Piet Mondrian, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol.

Johnston Marklee’s design for the MDI—embodying geometries simple and complex, observed the Los Angeles Times, a building “layered with ideas”—will stand as a metaphor for the delicate medium of drawing. Join principals Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee to learn more about their design.
