Explore the intersections between reli-gious and sexual practices in this one-day workshop. The impact of religious beliefs on sexual functioning, pleasure, guilt, and compulsivity will be explored. Further, the relationships between religious beliefs and practices and the use of pornography, non-marital sexuality, attitudes toward family planning and contraception, and views of sexual orientation and gender identity will be addressed. These topics will be addressed through discussion of the empirical and qualitative research in these areas, as well as case studies and clinical examples.
Elizabeth Maynard, PhD, is licensed as a clinical psychologist and currently serves as the director of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program at the University of St. Thomas. Her emphasis in research, training, and clinical work is on the intersection of sexuality and religion/spirituality. Some of her recent work has also focused on the ways in which the DSM has served as a “sacred” text in a secular mental health community and themes of self-renewal for clinicians.
