Art in Public Spaces
June 29, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
@ Winter Street Studios, 2nd Floor Gallery
2101 Winter Street, Houston, TX 77007

Registration + Networking: 6:00 - 6:30pm. Program starts promptly at 6:30pm.

Creating art in public spaces, whether it's visual art, music, street theater or another creative endeavor, can be a challenge. Moving creative work out of the gallery or theater can require giving up control over several elements of the experience. Join Fresh Arts for a moderated panel discussion with Piper Faust (Weingarten Art Group) and Jimmy Castillo (HAA's Civic Art + Design), plus hear from local artist Chris Silkwood who (together with co-curator Gus Kopriva) has successfully traversed the public art red tape to organize three major public art projects on Heights Blvd.

UPDATE: Debbie McNulty, (Director of the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs) will also be in attendance to discuss the City of Houston's role in Civic Art and explain how the Cultural Affairs office can be a resource for artist groups wishing to put art on City property.

The workshop will focus on how to find local opportunities, the difference between RFQ’s and RFP’s, the application and artist selection process, policies + contracts, plus tips on how to secure permissions for your work and anticipate the unexpected to successfully create art in public spaces. While the emphasis will be on percent-for-art programs, other models of public art projects including privately funded projects and Silkwood’s grassroots neighborhood approach will be discussed.
