Since its founding in 1908, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s structure and objectives have evolved dramatically. While traditional law enforcement activities continue to be key responsibilities for the agency, national security has become the FBI’s chief mission following 9/11. Counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and cyber security are becoming the FBI's top three priorities.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge Edward Michel has served with the FBI for 20 years. In 2012, he was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge - Houston Division, Counterterrorism Branch, where he managed programs on counterterrorism, domestic terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction. The following year, Michel was assigned to the Intelligence Branch, where he was responsible for intelligence collection and dissemination, the human intelligence team, intelligence analysts, staff operations specialists, investigative operations analysts, resident agencies, and the language services group.

Michel previously specialized in narcotics, violent crime, and white-collar crime cases. He was involved with investigations that resulted in the convictions of numerous public officials, such as police officers and senior city prosecutors. As the National Indian Gaming Working Group Coordinator, Michel created an agenda to protect the integrity of Indian gaming, an annual $28-billion-dollar industry. He has also taken part in investigations relating to the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act and Crimes on the High Seas. Prior to joining the FBI, Michel served as a police officer for the city of New Orleans. He received his bachelor's degree from Tulane University and is currently pursuing his master's degree with a concentration in Emergency Management and Counterterrorism Studies.
