Your late-night snack run just got a little less convenient. 7-Eleven has shut down all of its 31 remaining stores in India, ending its current retail operations in the country. The stores operated by Reliance Retail were closed on September 30 after the end of its five-year partnership with Seven & i Holdings – the Japanese convenience giant’s parent company.

The first store of 7-Eleven in India was opened in October 2021, and the global convenience chain eventually grew across multiple cities in the country, counting around 60 outlets at its peak, but the remaining network narrowed to 31 stores across Pune and Mumbai. As reported by Deccan Herald, some 7 Eleven outlets might function briefly to liquidate the remaining inventory before shutting down entirely.

From a Mumbai debut to the exit of 7-Eleven in India

While neither the parent company of 7 Eleven nor Reliance Retail has revealed the reason behind the nationwide shutdown of the convenience giant, reports point to the intense competition from local retailers that the convenience store format faces in India.

The local retailers – or kirana – had the everyday essentials game covered for years, while quick commerce made ordering groceries, snacks and last-minute needs from home easy. This creates a tricky equation for organised convenience stores like 7-Eleven: staffing, logistics, higher rents, while competing for the same immediate-needs purchases which can be picked up from the nearest local retailer or delivered within a few minutes.

As of now, 7-Eleven stores in India are officially a thing of the past. In a country where kiranas (local retailers) and quick-commerce apps are both in a tough fight to be your closest convenience store, the global giant found that getting the physical convenience-store formula right here was anything but convenient.

About 7-Eleven

7-Eleven is one of the world's largest convenience store chains, spread across 20 countries with over 85,000 stores. The chain, founded in 1927 in the US, is best known for its grab-and-go format and offers everything from coffee, cold drinks, snacks, ready-to-eat meals to groceries and everyday essentials. Its stores stock local favourites and products as per the regional market. In India, 7-Eleven followed the same format, offering food, beverages, and daily essentials as per the country's market and needs.
