At the risk of sounding a little dramatic, this one does sting. Hard Rock Cafe, once a rite of passage for live music lovers, birthday celebrators and anyone who’s ever ordered a towering burger 'for the table', is shutting down most of its outlets across India.

The global hospitality brand is closing ten locations across major cities, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune, along with three outlets in Bengaluru. The only one that’s escaped the shutdown (for now) is Goa, which will continue operations.

For many, this marks the end of a very specific kind of night out. Hard Rock Cafe conjures memories of walls lined with rock memorabilia, American comfort food, and live gigs that made it a dependable spot for everything from casual dates to full-blown drinking scenes. With the closures, those performances, and the familiar menu that went with them, will disappear from most Indian cities.

Why is this happening?

The shutdown follows the termination of Hard Rock Cafe licensing agreement with JSM Corporation, the company that has operated the brand in India since 2006. Without that partnership, the chain’s presence in the country has effectively come to a halt.

That said, this may not be a complete goodbye just yet. The brand is reportedly exploring ways to stay in the Indian market in some capacity. Until then, consider this your cue to pour one out for a place that defined a certain era of going out.
