Think bouldering, mountain biking, highlining, kayaking, music and more over two weeks in Kargil's Suru Valley.

Exactly when you thought Ladakh couldn't get any more adventurous, the Himalayan region is adding another cool thing to its calendar: the Suru Outdoor Fest! The event brings longboarding, rock climbing, camping, bouldering, highlining, mountain biking, music and more to Suru Valley in Kargil this September!
The festival will be held over two weeks, from September 10 to 25. This is the tenth edition of the event, with over a thousand attendees expected from across 25 countries.
The Suru Outdoor Fest began in 2016 with a group of friends and their crash pads. Over the past decade, the festival grew into a major multi-sport outdoor gathering in South Asia. The ten-day event takes place at Kargil's permanent outdoor bouldering area, where some of the boulders are believed to date back centuries.
Throughout the festival, you can try seven adventure activities: bouldering, highlining, mountain biking, kayaking, flow arts, yoga and martial arts. Alongside these, there will be music and film screenings, which are just as much a part of the festival experience.
Suru Outdoor Fest won the prestigious UIAA Rock Climbing Festival Award in 2019, and subsequent media coverage helped put Suru Valley on the global adventure map, making the festival bigger and better each year.
Ten days is a long time to take off work, but the festival has a Wi-Fi-enabled basecamp area where you can get some work done before noon and head out to a boulder by afternoon. In other words, it's a pretty good fit for remote workers, digital nomads and anyone who refuses to choose between their laptop and an adventure holiday.
Beyond sports and adventure, Suru is also a platform for environmental and community action. Every edition, a portion of the proceeds goes towards conservation work in the Suru Valley, including trail building and waste management, while also supporting local Ladakhi families who host more than thousand visitors during the festival.
Suru Valley lies in the heart of Kargil, and is known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, heritage villages and adventure potential.
The Suru Outdoor Fest is envisioned as a way to spotlight the valley. It also serves as a tourism initiative aimed at promoting Suru Valley as a summer adventure destination, while raising awareness about the importance of protecting its fragile ecosystem.
Head to the festival's website to register. There are several payment options, with fees starting at ₹2,500 per day, and varying for students and working professionals.
Core activities such as bouldering, yoga and flow arts are open to registered participants without additional sign-ups. Specialist workshops, including highlining, advanced mountain biking and kayaking, have limited spots and are allocated on-site on a first-come, first-served basis.
The event is a multi-sport festival, so even if climbing isn't your thing, there's plenty to do. You can sign up for kayaking, yoga, mountain biking and flow arts, or simply attend the live music and film screenings. Or, really, just come for the experience of being in one of the most spectacular valleys in the Himalayas.
All participants must sign a liability waiver covering activities including climbing, highlining, mountain biking and water sports. The waiver is included as part of the registration process.
Participants under 18 can attend only with a signed waiver from a parent or legal guardian.
Apart from plenty of adrenaline-fuelled activities, you'll be served vegetarian food, usually prepared locally with Ladakhi produce. The festival can cater to vegan and gluten-free diets, provided you inform the organisers in advance. Non-vegetarian options may be available on select evenings.
Filtered and boiled drinking water will be available throughout the campsite, but carry a reusable bottle. It's best to avoid drinking directly from streams because of upstream human activity.
The site also has a trained first-aid team. The nearest basic health centre is around 15 minutes away, while the closest fully equipped hospital is in Kargil, approximately 40km from the site.
The campsite has eight compost toilets, 10 tent toilets, two bathrooms and four shower points. Hot water is limited, so be considerate about how long you spend in the shower. The facilities are cleaned twice daily.
Pack warm layers for the night, when temperatures can drop to around 8–12°C. During the day, the sun can be intense at altitude, so carry sunscreen and sunglasses. Since it is monsoon season, you may encounter some rain, so a lightweight rainproof layer is worth packing.
For bouldering and other activities, bring sturdy hiking shoes, a reusable water bottle, a sleeping bag if you plan to sleep in a tent, personal medicines and a headlamp.
Forgot your climbing shoes? You can rent them on-site.
It's also worth carrying at least ₹3,000–₹5,000 in cash for gear rentals, local purchases and additional food items. Internet connectivity can be patchy in the region, while the nearest ATM is in Kargil town, approximately 2–3 hours from the bouldering site.
