Sandals Resorts may be synonymous with honeymoons and couples' retreats, but don’t let that reputation fool you. On a recent sister trip, I found that Sandals Dunn’s River in Ocho Rios, Jamaica delivers far more than candlelit dinners and couples’ massages. With 12 restaurants highlighting local and global flavors, sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea and Jamaican hospitality, the remodeled resort turned out to be an ideal place to reconnect, indulge and unwind—made even better by sharing the stay with my sister.
Why stay at Sandals Dunn’s River?
Located on the north coast of Jamaica, Sandals Dunn’s River underwent a major renovation, and it shows. Boasting 260 rooms, five pools and direct beach access, the all-inclusive resort offers plenty of space to relax and recharge. My sister and I checked into a Tufa Terrace One-Bedroom Suite, one of 14 room types offered. It was complete with a rain shower, walk-in closet, fully stocked bar and sea-facing plunge pool.
One of the most impressive features? The personal butler service included with our suite. While we weren’t sure we’d need it, our butler quickly became a go-to for poolside chair reservations, restaurant bookings and daily check-ins that made the stay seamless.
What are the rooms like at Sandals Dunn’s River?
Each room at the resort is thoughtfully designed with clean, modern decor and Caribbean art. The space felt spacious and inviting, with sliding doors that opened to sweeping sea views and a private pool and tub. The spa-like bathroom features double sinks, a rain shower and a walk-in closet. The mini bar was constantly restocked with snacks and drinks, including Jamaican rum and wine. While it’s clearly made with couples in mind, the layout of the room works well for siblings and close friends. Yes, I shared a king-sized bed with my sister, but it felt oddly nostalgic (like our childhood bunk bed days, just a lot more elegant).
What are the best restaurants and bars at the resort?
Resort food doesn’t always have the best reputation, but the food is where Sandals Dunn’s River really shines. My sister and I made it our mission to sample as many of the 12 restaurants as possible, from jerk pork at the Jerk Shack and fresh sashimi at Hanami to indulgent French fare at L’Amande. The resort’s café, BLUM, became our go-to spot for caffeine (the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is so good, you must take some home with you) and sweet treats—think mini passionfruit and mango cakes, cocoa nib brownies and Jamaican fruit cake.
One upcoming perk I got to preview: a dining credit to use at local partner restaurants. We used ours at Miss T’s Kitchen, a local favorite in Ocho Rios known for soulful Jamaican staples like oxtail stew, salted cod and rum cheesecake. It was the kind of meal that stays with you long after the trip ends.
What is the service like at Sandals Dunn’s River?
The staff at Sandals Dunn’s River were consistently warm, helpful and attentive. Our butler helped us navigate restaurant bookings and snag prime poolside spots, while spa staff delivered some of the best massages we’ve had. Every interaction, from housekeeping staff to restaurant servers, was filled with genuine kindness and pride in sharing Jamaican culture.
What are the pools and spa like at Sandals Dunn’s River?
The Red Lane Spa was a standout. My sister and I opted for a 90-minute full-body massage—technically billed as a couples massage, but perfect for anyone needing serious relaxation. Our massage therapists worked out every knot and tight spot, leaving us deeply relaxed and recharged. The property also features multiple pools (including swim-up bars) and a beautiful beach. Cabanas, loungers and towel service make it easy to soak up the sun.
What’s the area like around Sandals Dunn’s River?
Sandals Dunn’s River is located in Ocho Rios, a port town located on the north coast of Jamaica. It’s not far from popular attractions like Dunn’s River Falls and Blue Hole. While the resort itself is packed with amenities, guests can also book off-property excursions or explore the town’s local spots. We joined the Sandals Foundation’s Reading Road Trip, where we visited a nearby school to read to kids, a moving and memorable way to give back while traveling.
Why you should book a stay at Sandals Dunn’s River
Sandals might give off honeymoon vibes, but the resort caters to all kinds of travelers, whether you’re a water sports fanatic on a family vacation or, like me, a relaxation-seeker on a sibling trip. The best part? The warmth of the staff and the way local culture is woven into the fabric of the resort—from daily specials highlighting Jamaican cuisine (hello, beef patties) to opportunities to give back through the Sandals Foundation—makes you feel more connected to Jamaica than when you first arrived. That “One Love” spirit is everywhere, and it’s what makes a stay at Sandals Dunn’s River so magical.
