Where to find last-minute local gifts for Mother’s Day

Forgot? No worries. Here’s where to find locally made fashion, textiles, books, skincare, flowers and beautiful things before Sunday.

Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, 10 May 2026, which means there’s still just enough time to avoid the petrol-station-flowers-and-panic-chocolates routine (although The Pantry in Rosebank is still a very good option for this, if you can find parking, of course).

Joburg has plenty of independent stores, local design-led boutiques and indie labels that can make a last-minute gift look suspiciously thoughtful. The trick, of course, is knowing where to go, and ideally choosing a neighbourhood where you can do a stylish sweep in under an hour.

Here’s where to shop for Mother’s Day gifts in Johannesburg when the clock is ticking, but your standards remain intact.

44 Stanley

Start at 44 Stanley, Joburg’s evergreen answer to almost every stylish gifting emergency. It’s compact, leafy and filled with the kind of stores where you can arrive a bit frazzled and leave looking like you’ve been thinking about this gift for weeks.

At Me&B, one of Joburg’s perfect occasion spots, look for easy local fashion with charm, bold colour and enough personality to feel like a personalised treat. Mungo is for the mom who cares about her home a little more than her wardrobe: beautiful woven towels, table linen and textiles that elevate any interior. Then make your way to Guillotine by Lisa Jaffe, where the mood is more grown-up and glamorous. The store is known for Lisa Jaffe’s unique designs, embracing local techniques, and also stocks pieces from local and female-led brands, including Pichulik, Romaria and L’Mad.

Best for: mothers who love clothes, textiles, jewellery, scarves and a good 44 Stanley coffee after the fact.

Nine Yards

For something newer, greener and a little more neighbourhood-in-the-making, head to Nine Yards in Rosebank. The precinct sits at the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Chester Road, beside The Garden Shop Nursery, and brings together retail, food, wellness, art and culture in a design-minded mix.

At &Ticks, look for playful, design-led pieces with a handmade quality that really speaks to how much you care about longevity and supporting local designers. Something Good Studio is ideal for soft furnishings and home pieces with real tactility - the best snuggly things ahead of Joburg’s upcoming winter. Think throws, wraps and scarves that warm up a gift and include some local pattern.

Then there’s The Garden Shop Nursery, which remains one of the easiest ways to turn a forgotten occasion into something generous. A sculptural pot plant, a herb planter, orchids, garden tools or a beautiful outdoor accessory will usually land better than another scented candle bought in fear.

Best for: design objects, textiles, plants, garden gifts and mothers who like their presents with a side of lunch.

Rosebank Mall and The Zone

Rosebank is the perfect catch-all when you need options, parking and a very low tolerance for faffing. It’s not the most scenic route, but it works when you want to shop fast and maybe grab a little coffee while you’re at it.

Start at The Space, a long-standing champion of local fashion and accessories. It’s a good place to find a dress, a jacket, jewellery, a bag or something bright enough to say “I know you”.

At SOKO District, the offer is broader and a bit edgier: small gifts, essentials, fashion, homeware, accessories, coffee and artisanal food brands, all gathered into a local department-store format. It’s especially good when you don’t know whether you’re buying for yourself and need something beautiful.

Round it off with Poetry for everyone’s favourite sleepwear, robes, and some of the best homeware in town, like their ceramics and crockery. A stop at Rosebank’s Exclusive Books is always a good idea, especially for the mom who actually wants peace and a book more than another thing to dust.

Best for: one-stop shopping, books, fashion, accessories and panic buying that still looks respectable.

Parkhurst

Parkhurst’s 4th Avenue is practically built for this kind of mission. Park once, walk the strip and pretend the whole thing was a leisurely Saturday plan.

Start with Africology Parkhurst Urban Spa for skincare, body products and treatment vouchers. A product set is a lovely general gift, but a treatment voucher is even better if your mother’s love language is being left alone in a quiet room for 90 minutes.

For fashion and colour, Jane Valken is a joy. The South African lifestyle label is known for slow fashion, hand-loomed cotton and hand-carved block prints, which means kaftans, robes, quilted jackets and pieces that feel made for holidays, even if the holiday is just Sunday lunch in Parkhurst.

A few doors away, Hannah Lavery offers a calmer kind of wardrobe: linen, cotton, easy shapes and beautifully wearable pieces. It’s ideal for mothers who like clothes that feel easy, elegant and quietly pulled together.

Best for: spa vouchers, skincare, linen, slow fashion, robes, relaxed dresses and gifts with actual taste.

The last-minute rule

Don’t overthink it. A great Mother’s Day gift doesn’t need to shout “occasion”. It can be a beautiful towel, a new robe, a pot plant, a locally made dress, a book she’ll actually read, a facial she didn’t have to organise herself, or something small and lovely that says you noticed what she likes, and appreciate what she does.

Just don’t arrive empty-handed and call “your presence” the gift. That only works once.
