Time Out says

With its infectious energy, memorable songs and plenty of laughs, The Big Bad Musical is guaranteed to leave audiences smiling. Performed at Roodepoort Theatre, this clever production brings together well-known fairy-tale characters for a courtroom trial where the Big Bad Wolf takes the stand to share his side of the story in a musical packed with humour, catchy songs and unexpected twists.

The production keeps its momentum throughout, making the most of its clever concept. Its brisk pacing, witty dialogue and irresistibly catchy songs make it impossible not to enjoy. The songs are one of the show’s biggest strengths, leaving me wishing there was a rewind button so I could hear them all over again. They're the kind of tunes that stay with you long after the final bow.

Comedy that steals the show

Comedy is where The Big Bad Musical truly shines. Its humour has broad appeal, delivering jokes that resonate with audiences of all ages without ever feeling forced.

One of the show’s biggest laughs comes from one of the witnesses called to testify. She refuses to sit on an ordinary chair, insisting that she needs a tuffet (a small, low foot stool) instead, sending the courtroom into a frenzy as everyone tries to find a suitable seat. But was it the seat that mattered or the testimony!?  It’s a small but memorable moment that perfectly captures the show’s infectious sense of fun.

The courtroom news reports are another inspired touch, hilariously summarising the day’s proceedings while keeping the audience entertained and up to date. They not only add to the laughs, but also maintain the show’s momentum, making the trial feel like a major event unfolding in real time.

A stage that always feels alive

What really stood out was the cast’s unwavering commitment to every moment of the performance. Even when the spotlight was on a single character, the cast stayed completely in character, responding naturally to the action unfolding around them. That level of commitment meant the courtroom always felt alive, with every scene unfolding.

From the opening number to the finale, the cast’s enthusiasm is infectious, complemented by strong vocals and energetic choreography that keeps the production moving at a lively pace.

You are part of the verdict

The show blurs the line between stage and audience, inviting the audience to become part of the courtroom experience. The cast’s playful interactions with theatre-goers create an immersive courtroom atmosphere where everyone feels like members of the proceedings.

One of the production’s most enjoyable moments is when the audience takes on the role of the jury, deciding the Big Bad Wolf’s fate. It’s a clever piece of audience participation that makes them an essential part of the story, giving every performance its own unique energy.

Why book?

Filled with humour, memorable songs and interactive storytelling, The Big Bad Musical captures the magic of live theatre in a way that’s impossible to resist. It’s a joyful family musical that will have audiences leaving the theatre with smiles on their faces, perhaps wishing they could hear those catchy songs just one more time.
