Ten years on from England’s victory in the Rugby World Cup, here’s your chance to remember the day with a plodding adaptation of a mediocre play about the morning of the big match set in a Home Counties rugby club bar. Why only a handful of souls have pitched up for this historic moment is just one issue in hand. Elsewhere, Norman Pace’s chairman seeks re-election, mouthy Aussie coach Michael Beckley is up to no good, scheming property developers covet the site and first-team goal-kicker George MacKay is convinced he’s psychically linked to England’s playmaker. Since we already know the scores coming in via satellite, the story’s task is to get us involved in these various strands, and while we never truly dig the characters, we appreciate the effort. Former TV comic Pace puts in a decent shift as the likeable club stalwart, though performances are variable elsewhere. Like the come-on title however, it’s never as funny or clever as it thinks it is.
