Everything we know so far about ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2’

A guide to the second movie in JK Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts franchise, including cast, characters, plot and its UK release date

By Ellie Walker-Arnott

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ has just apparated into our cinemas, filling us with more joy than a year’s worth of free seats on the tube. But there is always mischief on the horizon and plots hatching in the Pottersphere.

‘Fantastic Beasts 2' is already in the works. Here’s your essential guide to everything we know about the sequel so far.

Everything we know about 'Fantastic Beasts 2'

It’s the second of five films in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise

‘Fantastic Beasts’ was originally the first in a movie trilogy, but JK Rowling has now revealed that she’s in the process of writing five (yeah, five!) wizarding movies.

‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ will be darker

The studio behind the films, Warner Brothers, have said the second instalment ‘moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances’.

The second film will take the story in a new direction

‘We’ve seen the script for the second movie, which takes the story in a whole new direction,’ director David Yates told Entertainment Weekly. ‘The second movie introduces new characters as [JK Rowling] builds this part of the Harry Potter universe further. It’s a very interesting development from where we start out.’

It’s set in Paris and the UK

Au revoir New York City. The action in the second movie is set to leave the USA, with Newt returning to his native UK before heading to the French capital Paris. ‘I think it will be difficult to ignore America, but the next one is predominantly Europe,’ says Yates.

It could take a big jump forward in time

Rowling tweeted that the second movie won’t pick up a few days after the end of the first – and admitted the entire franchise is set to span across 19 years, taking the finale up to 1945, the year of Dumbledore epic duel with his arch nemesis Gellert Grindelwald. Intriguing, eh?

Johnny Depp is playing the bad guy

Talking of Grindelwald, aka the pre-Voldemort baddie, he’s played by Johnny Depp. We spied him in the first movie but he’s set to take on a much bigger role in ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’.

A young Dumbledore will appear

Thought ‘Fantastic Beasts’ was completely separate from the Harry Potter stories? Yeah, so did we for a while. But the beloved Hogwarts headmaster is set to appear in the second movie. There’s no word yet on who’ll play him but there are plenty of rumours doing the rounds.

… and he might be openly gay

Rowling has teased an attraction between Dumbledore and Grindelwald in the past, so could Dumbledore be openly out in the Fantastic Beasts franchise? ‘There’s lots to unpack in that relationship,’ the author told ScreenCrush. ‘I will say that you will see Dumbledore as a younger man, and quite a troubled man because he wasn’t always the sage. He was always very clever, but we’ll see what I think was the formative period of his life. As far as his sexuality is concerned, watch the space.’

‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ has a release date
