Time Out says

3 out of 5 stars
The name of this doc describes Hole drummer Patty Schemel’s playing style: impactful and aggressive. But Schemel’s life bears out the obvious metaphor in that title, too, as she goes from teen punk to gay rock star to destitute heroin addict to sober business owner: no matter how many blows you take, it’s all about endurance. ‘Hit So Hard’ is made with love (and Courtney Love, who pops up often), and its story is heartfelt. But with a basic style and a familiar rags-to-riches-to-rags throughline, there’s not enough to justify the 103-minute running time or a big-screen release. Still, there’s much to like, from footage of Schemel and Kurt Cobain, to a final scene of the 45-year-old drummer working with a new generation of angry young punks.
