Time Out says

This quirkily amusing piece of vanity film-making is essentially a ludicrously expensive cult movie. Fresh from prison, reformed thief Hawk (Willis) is coerced by filthy rich megalomaniacs Darwin and Minerva Mayflower (Grant and Bernhard) into a plot to steal three Leonardo masterpieces that provide the key to an alchemical machine for turning lead into gold. Hovering in the backgroud are CIA man Coburn and beautiful Vatican spy MacDowell. Shades of TV's Moonlighting remain, with a cavalier disregard for plot logic and henchmen named after candy bars. Unfortunately, neither Lehmann's direction nor the in-jokey script achieve a consistent tone, veering from knockabout fun to vicious, throat-slashing gore. Willis smirks and smarms his way through some neatly staged set pieces, but funnier by far are MacDowell's drug-induced display of dolphin-speak and the deliciously demented antics of Grant and Bernhard.
