Great hook, crap movie. Here's the zinger: Redford offers a seven-figure sum for a night of hormonal judo with Moore, but she loves some other schmuck. This is so high-concept it practically needs breathing apparatus, but Lyne's flash-trash panache reduces it to mere hi-gloss. To call the characters cardboard would ennoble them. David (Harrelson) and Diana (Moore) are happily married, successful architect and real estate salesperson respectively, until the recession all but wipes them out. They head for Las Vegas, hoping to win an instant fortune, but ill luck polishes them off, and only the million dollar proposition from Redford's enigmatic magnate stands between the couple and financial ignominy. Can their relationship survive this sternest of all tests? The eventual triumph of love over money is so moving, you'd need a heart of stone not to laugh. At last, a movie for people who cry at pop videos.
