When Pachu is chosen to become the new leader of the ashram, his grandfather is overjoyed. This is an inordinate honour for the family. Pachu's parents, however, are horrified. Dearly loving their only child, they cannot stand the thought of him being taken away. Producer/director Jayaraj (from Kottayam in Kerala) explores the nature of family and duty with a keen and tender eye, probing the consequences of tradition and status without resorting to polemic: the family's elevated position in the village dissolves the intimacy of friendship, bringing an uncomfortable isolation, yet to reverse the decision would bring shame and dishonour to all.
