Last Vegas

Turns out that when you cross ‘The Hangover’ with ‘Grumpy Old Men’, you don’t summon the apocalypse, but instead conjure up a kindhearted lark. ‘Last Vegas’ isn’t just a throwback to the days when its four leads – Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas – dominated Hollywood. It also harks back to a time when comedies cared about characters. Though admittedly its premise is lazy: on the eve of his marriage to a 32-year-old, an industrially tanned sexagenarian Billy (Douglas) is joined in Sin City by his childhood pals (De Niro, Freeman and Kline).

Cue a barrage of routine ageist gags, which at least come with an inclusive, self-deprecating spirit, which grows more endearing – especially when 60-year-old Mary Steenburgen classes things up as a sultry lounge singer who outshines every string bikini within eyeshot. Mortality looms even for Hollywood heroes, making it hard to resist what’s left of the party. Everyone’s slumming it here, but enjoyably so.

Very slow moving comedy which I couldnt work out who it was aimed at. If its aimed at an older audience I've a feeling it might feel a little patronising.

Not the worst film for a Sunday hangover under a duvet (when the slow moving might be a blessing) and with some funny moments...

Unlike Bob I really enjoyed it. OK like the review says it isn't high art but it is laugh out loud funny in places. Admittedly I have just come back from a bargain costing performance with it being Tuesday night but this was the fullest I have seen the screen for a long time, probably even fuller than Philomena. There were people of all ages who all laughed out loud. If you disengage your brain and go with it it is very funny and makes you think a little too. Tomorrow's buy one get one free with a certain mobile company so if you are at a loose end give this a go. A solid 3 star comedy. Good not great but worth a shot.

this film is commercial tripe. don't waste your precious christmas pennys on it.
