Stranded in Goa when funding for her latest flick falls through, American actress Marigold (Ali Larter) accepts a dancing role in a Bollywood musical and enlists the help of Prem (Salman Khan), a choreographer, to teach her some moves. Inevitably, the pair indulge in some dirty dancing, and when Marigold learns that Prem is a prince with an impending arranged marriage, she is upset. Will the star of ‘Kama Sutra 3’ win her man?
American director Willard Carroll (‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’ and producer of numerous video titles for kids) adopts a Richard Curtis rom-com approach. The early Goan sequences capture the haphazard nature of the Bollywood craft, but it’s later on, when the action switches to Rajasthan, that the ‘will they reunite?’ plot fails to engage. We know from the outset that these lovers will sing and dance happily ever after. This fluffy cross-cultural experiment smacks of jumping on the Bollywood bandwagon with little insight into the genre it is trying to emulate or understanding of the country in which it’s set. Expect touristy shots of the Taj Mahal and elephants.
