This is one of the few biographical movies in which the subject has the gall to play himself. From humble beginnings in Bermondsey, young Thomas discovers his seemingly limitless talent, joins the Merchant Navy (his only sensible move), then finds fame and fortune in the coffee bars of Soho. All complete hokum, of course, but often unintentionally hilarious. Steele is so cute and wholesome you can't help fantasising that something horrible and sordid was going on behind the scenes. Worth seeing for purely kitsch reasons.
