The Twilight Saga: New Moon
Given the effect the first ‘Twilight’ film had on teens, it’s appropriate that the sequel is a study of sexual and romantic obsession. When pallid, principled vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) leaves town, his chaste girlfriend, Bella (Kristen Stewart), moons and mourns for months. The usual teen pursuits don’t interest her: she sneers at shopping and only opts for sport or cinema if they bring her closer to Edward. Then solace arrives in the bulging biceps of Jacob (Taylor Lautner), Bella’s childhood friend-turned-boy-hulk.

It’s not exactly a celebration of female independence, but ‘New Moon’ still has an expert handle on its young audience. Near-kisses and sexual frustration abound. Boys become attractive yet also dangerous when they come of age – and the good ones keep the monsters in check. This time, the monsters aren’t merely vampires, but werewolves: spectacular CG creatures that snarl and pounce their way through several enjoyable action sequences, then transform back into buff, topless young studs… Yep, ‘New Moon’ knows what it’s doing.

Plot-wise it’s a slow starter, but gains momentum when Bella develops a taste for adrenaline in the hope of catching a glimpse of her vampiric protector. Motorbike rides and deathly dives follow, along with a scenic race to Italy to meet uber-vampire Michael Sheen (always a pleasure). Welcome comedy comes from Bella’s schoolmates, notably Jessica (Anna Kendrick), who wearily deconstructs the symbolism in zombie movies while bemoaning the lack of hot guys. Is this ‘New Moon’ defending its fanbase and pre-empting criticism about its transparent agenda? Natalie and Bella are intelligent young women, yet ruled by their hormones – plenty of room for audience identification there.  ‘New Moon’ is little more than a skilful soap opera, but it’s still enjoyable escapism – even if you’re old and wise enough to see through it.

Twilight is, without profanity, pretty gosh darn awful. However, there are 3 redeeming things about Twilight: New Moon.

1) It is the only storyline in which human Bella Swan actually DOES something. Mind you, she really doesn’t do anything for 2/3rds of the entire film, but that last, glorious third, she actually does something and for once, isn’t the person being saved but the person trying to do the saving. Nice one, Bella. That is, until, you know she finds Edward and he’s back to saving her… Yeah, it doesn’t last long.

2) The soundtrack is just awesome. It’s so awesome that really I should have made it number one on this list. Death Cab for Cutie, Anya Marina, The Killers, Lykke Li. I mean “Slow Life” by Grizzly Bears, just a great tune. Depressive, but so great.

3) There is a day when all the Twilight films are good. Every film has it’s day, right? That day is known as the hangover day. The kind of hangover day when all you can do is muster the energy to lie on the couch, and press the TV remote button to ‘on’. The kind of hangover day where you have much to do, but you’re so hungover you worry and anxiety bounce cannot cut through the thick skin of your hangover. The kind of hangover that you feel like crying a bit, not because you’re sad, but it feels good and emotive to cry. The brain-dead kind of hangover day, with a Chinese take-away, unwashed hair, and some Twilight. That's a solid hangover day m'friends.

This film is as good as the first 'Twilight'. I read the reviews about the New Moon and was unsure on weither to bother going to see the film... but I was glad I did as the effects were alot better then reported and the story line great... that good that I went and bought the third book and the fourth and read them both within a week!! (I dont read books normally either) The story line grabbed me. Great stuff so I made my mum watch Twilight and now she has also got the bug.. so.. Im taking her to watch New Moon tonight!! Great I get to see it again so soon !! LOL Can't wait for the third film to be released!!! Hope everyone enjoys the film as much as I have, easy watching and very pleasing to the eye!!!!!

I agree with a few people, there are a couple of bits in the film that i cringed at, some acting was stiff but overall they did a really good job. i loved the wolves in the forest chasing vampires, the music, the vivid colours, it emphasized how unreal bellas new world is, as for the scene with bella and edward in the forest running/skipping, its mearly a vision that alice has shown aro to delight him, make it so fairytail that it encapsulates him. people need to read the books then watch the films, you get so much more meaning out of the films that way, every look, every sigh, all accounted for and explained in the book. definitly a film u shud see, even if you do go to the cinema with pre-conceptions. a massive well done to chris for going against the grain and creating something truely unique and inspiring

I cut them some slack with Twilight, but not with this one. To say the book was butchered is an understatement. I was fully prepared to take a long, depressing ride with Bella into the depths of hell, but instead took a trip down comedy lane. What was the point of all those ridiculous one-liners? And Ashley (Alice) - she was terrible. She was so much better in Twilight - at least she showed some character, but here it was like watching paint dry when she spoke. The only scene that gave me any enjoyment was the confrontation between Bella and Paul. It was just as "electric" as I pictured it in the book. Folks listen, don't waste the money. Usman get a life man.

I was really looking forward to this film, but left incredibly disappointed. A larger budget and a change in director has served only to destroy what was so charming about the first film and has taken away any of the saga's dignity. The edgy and contemporary soundtrack of the first film has been replaced with a melodramatic score and soundtrack that replaces subtle emotional underscoring with a barrage of swelling orchestral motions every time Bella sees/does/touches/thinks about/hears/etc about anything vaguely emotional or conflicting. It is completely overwhelming and unwelcome in it's accentuation of the cheap 'money shots' in this film. The direcoras been quite condescending to the target audience of this film; spoonfeeding each emotion and relying too heavily on the beauty and appeal of the cast whilst neglecting the complexities of the issues raised in the film. Overall, I left feeling quite insulted by the director who has grossly underestimated the audience of this film an very disappointed by the glossy, and entirely shallow new world of the Twilight saga - such a shame!

Wow... I really don't know where to start with this one so I'll just get straight to the point – This movie was a steaming pile of nonsense. Nothing about it worked. Nothing at all. I would rather be shot in the face than watch half an hour of this abomination again. The actors were terrible; there was no chemistry between them at all. The dialogue was clumsy and clichéd. The special effects were just awful. However, the biggest crime that New Moon commits is that it was boring. Very very boring. I wouldn't be at all harsh towards the movie if it were at least mildly entertaining. It creeps along slowly at an agonizing pace. Kristen Stewart holds the same neutral expression throughout, as if she's not interested in being there herself. Whilst I wouldn't call this the worst movie ever made, it really has no excuses when you take the budget into account. Also, this is not a vampire movie. Vampires burst into flames and die slowly and painfully in sunlight, not glitter like fairies. I don't really know what those posing, pouting, entirely unintimidating things were, but they sure as hell weren't vampires.

There are nice vampires and nasty vampires, but all the werewolves are nice, and the trees are very nice. The nasty girl vampire is still cute. Michael Sheen channels Bela Lugosi.

i saw this film last night and fell asleep then the fans' clapping as the credits rolled woke me up so it must have been good.

Avatar for flix

Ooops I did see the movie honest - please read Jacob not Charlie for below - Charlie's Bella's dad an not an American Indian - an there's no place for incest in this clean movie.

Avatar for flix

Teenie hyped up movie - Bella is 19 and in love with a vampire, But Edward leaves town with his vampire family (a modern day version of the Addams family) to protect her, but his going breaks her heart and puts her in mortal danger. Bella increasingly turns to crazy stunts to bring back images of Edward - then she almost falls in love with muscle bound, "six pack" Charlie an American Crow Indian - he has his own secrets that eventually lead to a violent confrontation. It looks and feels like a well produced US TV series - not a memorable movie but the youngish audience loved it all - and that's what counts, I guess. A horror movie without the horror bit, a RomCom without the romance and comedy - if you're a fan you will luuuvv it else don't bother.
