The inaugural Dreamland Improvisational Jazz Festival is being held April 16-19, featuring a select group of internationally-renowned musicians whose careers span more than four decades of improvisational jazz.

About the Artists:

Thurs., April 16: Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston
The UK-based duo of alto saxophonist Trevor Watts and pianist Veryan Weston draw on their long experience of playing together, producing a telepathic-like dialogue centered on their shared sense of intuitive performance. Watts is a founding member of the now-legendary Spontaneous Music Ensemble and has collaborated with John Stevens, Paul Rutherford, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland and Barry Guy.

Friday, April 17: Jack Wright’s WREST
Known as the "Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation" for his global activities in the international free jazz community, saxophonist Jack Wright is a figurehead in the realm of free form improvisation. Wright has released more than 40 recordings and performed in over 25 countries. For his upcoming Dreamland performance, Wright will be leading his trio WREST, featuring bassist Evan Lipson and percussionist Ben Bennett.

Saturday, April 18: Ken Vandermark / Tim Barnes
Ken Vandermark is a fixture on the Chicago-area music scene since the 1990s and has earned wide critical praise for his playing as both a leader and sideman, as well as his multilayered compositions, which balance intricate orchestration with passionate improvisation. A recipient of a 1999 MacArthur Fellowship, Vandermark plays tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet and baritone saxophone.
Since 2001, Tim Barnes has been a globally recognized percussionist, composer, sound designer and audio archivist. He has performed internationally with some of experimental music’s most accomplished players, including John Zorn, Kim Gordon, Ikue Mori, Jim O’Rourke, Lee Ranaldo and Jeph Jerman. Barnes lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where he is the Artistic Director of the performance and visual art space Dreamland.

Sunday, April 19: Rob Mazurek's Black Cube SP (featuring members of the Sao Paulo Underground)
Chicago-based cornetist and electronics artist Rob Mazurek has collaborated with free jazz heavyweights such as Bill Dixon, Roscoe Mitchell and Pharaoh Sanders, as well as fellow genre-defying artists including Tortoise and Stereolab.
