Please join the honorable Greg Fischer, Mayor of Louisville, Most Reverend Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, and Dr. Joseph J. McGowan in a Thomas Merton Centennial Celebration Event. The exhibition, Thomas Merton: A Familiar Stranger, will premiere on the last day of Merton’s Centennial Year and explore racism, spirituality and compassion in the words of one of America’s most influential spiritual writers.

The celebration will begin with a choral piece by Bellarmine University Composer-in-Residence, Richard Burchard, based on the Merton text “Lord God of This Great Night” conducted by S. Timothy Glasscock and performed by Louisville Vocal Project with members of the Bellarmine Schola cantorum. Master of Ceremonies is Bellarmine President, Dr. Joseph J. McGowan. Special guests will include head of the US Conference of Bishops, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Louisville, Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, Louisville Mayor the Honorable Greg Fischer.

The afternoon will conclude with readings from Merton passages and a brief reflection on why the passage resonates and inspires. Guest Speakers include:
