Creative cocktails steal the show at this impressive spot in Spinningfields
When the original branch in Spinningfields was launched back in 2010, it was immediately clear that The Alchemist was to become Manchester’s ultimate molecular heaven, winning hearts with both its intriguing drinks selection and a slick aesthetic, blending modernity with gentle reminders of bygone eras. And so it proved, with the Alchemist securing its place in the city’s cocktail scene with a distinctive, exciting approach to mixology - the booze here is a real party piece.
As a sharing cocktail that lets you in on some of the science, the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is arguably the star of the show. And whilst the blend of Green Mark Russian vodka, Briottet elderflower liqueur, Cointreau, citron gomme and water doesn’t pack the biggest flavour punch, order this and you’ll have the whole bar gawking in jealousy. Alternatively try the Smoky Old Fashioned for a brilliantly simple twist on a trusted favourite, complete with a sphere of ice and oak smoke.
Food covers most bases, with standard dishes like Thai fish cakes and nachos alongside Japanese ramen, steaks, fajitas and that crowd-pleasing classic, chicken in a basket. By taking inspiration from each corner of the world the menu becomes mongrelised and safe, but within this there is something for everyone – and realistically, most people head here for the booze.
Fast-forward to 2016 and The Alchemist now has another branch on New York Street, plus outlets in Leeds and London, with a branch rumoured to come in Media City. However, along with the growth of the brand, so, too, has word spread, meaning that things can get pretty busy – but if you’re willing to brave the sea of customers at the bar (especially at the weekend), it is one of those Mancunian experiences that you should certainly buy into at least once.
