A cramped, lively vegetarian bar that puts on bands, comedians, poets and more in its small upstairs room

The small upstairs area above this popular Wilthington bar isn’t really big enough to house the parties and gigs that it does, but try telling that to the trendy types who’ve made it their local. As well as live music, there’s a comedy night called Quippopotamus, poetry, a quiz night that gives away free chips called simply ‘Quiz and Chips’ and appearances from emerging talent in all manner of creative disciplines.

A well-chosen craft beer selection belies its position on Oxford Road but the real draw is the fully vegetarian menu. The veggie ‘fish’ and chips is a particular stand-out, with breaded halloumi proving an excellent stand-in.

Many a hangover has this establishment's full vegan breakfast cured. OK, there is no cure really, but temporary and delicious sensory distractions are the next best thing. And Fuel's breakfasts certainly are that. The long lasting fullness isn't be sniffed at either. On a dish costing a lowly £5.95 is the wherewithal to solve student hunger and malnutrition, city wide. Sweet potato wedges, vegan sausages, fried mushrooms, three-bean salad, wilted spinach and two pieces of well (soya) buttered toast - this, friends, is the fabled Breakfast of Champions.

Indeed, it is highly glorious.

Fuel also does decent coffees, smoothies, and shakes. Plus it subtly turns into a hip bar around 7pm, signaled by a shift in the always on-point musical playlist, serving a ton of expensive craft beers to post-grads.
