Cash boost for Manchester's green spaces

Does your local park need some love and attention? More than 40 parks across Manchester are to receive makeovers to encourage more residents to visit the city’s green spaces.

A total of £1.5million is to be spent on improvements such as the planting of new flowers, installation of benches and repairs to paths to raise the standards of parks. A further £600,000 will also pay for improvements to play areas.

Chorlton Park, Philips Park in Clayton near Manchester City’s ground and Peel Hall Park in Sharston are among the locations which will have improvements made to them.

A further project will involve the clearance of undergrowth and new plants introduced at Wythenshawe Park's hall and walled garden. Heaton Park, Alexandra Park in Moss Side and Debdale Park in Gorton have already received money for individual schemes.

If you're wondering where the cash for the works has come from, it has been provided by a windfall from Manchester Airport. Greater Manchester’s ten local authorities have the majority shareholding of the group which owns Manchester, East Midlands, Bournemouth and Stansted airports, with profits invested back into the local area.
