Thinking outside the box for Manchester's homeless

Recent headline making events regarding the plight of homeless people in Manchester have left many wondering what can be done to help.

Back in May we reported on how Not Just Soup was supporting homeless people in the city, a group of independent Manchester restaurants offering surplus food to charity rather than binning it.

Now, Outside the Box comes along, bringing another novel way of showing support.

It's an exhibition and event happening in Manchester and in Altrincham between the 4th-30th November. The theme of the event is aimed at raising the awareness of those affected by homelessness, and the daily challenges they face, especially during the winter months. The event is also a fund-raiser with funds going towards the purchase of new supplies for those in need. These will then be distributed through a number of charities.

Ged Austin, Project Director

The exhibition will feature artwork and poetry of those affected by homelessness as well as work from artists exploring this theme. Art work will feature all forms of media, including paintings, photography and 3D work.

Participating groups include The Mustard Tree, Booth Centre and Acting on Impulse as well as various local, national and international artists. The event will open to the public at Nexus Art Café on the 4th November and in Altrincham at Local Creation and 6 George Street on the 24th November. There will be two evenings of arts, film screenings and performance from the 26-27th November at alternating venues, as well as live music by local singer Patrick Green and a candle-lit vigil at the Altrincham Venue.
