Located within the Arndale's food market, Pancho's Burritos operates with a bizarre two kitchen/counter system, located across the room from each other. Regardless of which one you visit, the food is consistent, tasty and offers good value for money and a rare taste of authentic Mexican fare in Manchester.
There's a general formula to ordering at Pancho's. Choose a filling from a changing array that may include slow cooked beef chilli, pulled pork in lime or with cactus, or chicken in chipotle sauce; choose a vehicle for this filling, from burritos and tacos to the rarer tostadas (deep fried corn tortillas); then choose your extra toppings from a list that includes jalapenos, cactus, guacamole and an extremely hot habanero salsa.
Vegetarians and vegans are looked after with substitutions and meat-free dishes such as their sopa azteca, made with ancho chillies, and there's even a vegetarian-friendly rendition of their hearty chilli. There's enough choice here for everyone to enjoy something different on multiple visits and not leave disappointed.
With Mexican beers (and tequila) in the offing and a strong nacho game (owing to the aforementioned toppings), it's possible to elevate your meal beyond the standard quick lunch that the Arndale market usually offers. Unfortunately, the surroundings and seating options are far from optimal, but if that isn't a concern, there's plenty to enjoy and discover from this endearingly unpretentious and friendly operation.
