Pocket-sizes sushi spot offering soups, tempuras and pickles alongside all your usual fish and rice combos

There are two types of sushi: the mass produced standard kind that can be picked up at supermarkets, and the kind that's lovingly prepared in front of your face by a chef who will only use produce he deems worthy.

The latter can be found at Umezushi. Located behind the Manchester Arena under the railway arches you'll be forgiven for missing this tiny 23-seater restaurant among its industrial surroundings. Once you step inside, its tranquil interior is calm and zen-like.

The menu changes daily, dependent on the fish available from the markets. Starters include Japanese pickles, edamame beans, miso soup and a selection of tempura. The specials board changes daily, offering a small selection of hot dishes and side plates.

The main event is of course the sushi, prepared in full view in the open kitchen. Simply choose your fish/veg and your sushi style and it’s prepared fresh to order, so you may have a little wait. Don't know your hosomaki from your uramaki? Not to worry – the friendly staff are always happy to explain anything and everything if needed.

There’s a small selection of bottled beers to choose from, a large range of sake, served both chilled and hot, plum liqueur and a varied wine list, which includes Japanese wines. Or you could simply stick to the traditional green tea.
