Idris Elba’s troubled but exhilarating play explores the legacy of apartheid in spectacular fashion

It’s got a lot of competition, but the de facto theatre headline show for this year’s Manchester International Festival is ‘Tree’, from one Idris Elba. Adapted by the superstar actor and director Kwame Kwei-Armah from Elba’s recent album ‘Mi Mandela’, the South Africa-set drama follow Kaelo, a young Brit who reluctantly returns to his parents’ home country and face up to the wrongs of the past. Starring Alfred Enoch and Sinéad Cusack, ‘Tree’ has an immersive production that requires the audience to stand throughout as the action unfolds around it.
