The People's Library says
1492 signifies the beginning of a long history of injustice. Colonization, enslavement, exploitation of labor, the preservation of systematic patriarchy, and other forms of violence have been utilized to advance and consolidate power into the hands of a few. The laboring masses were manipulated into building an empire on the ashes of a destroyed civilization.

Backbone } 1492 is a celebration of the oppressed; creating a sense of unity among communities that have been systematically oppressed throughout American history. The artwork showcased deals with oppressive states of history, class, race, gender, religion, sexuality, and other issues that have historically served to divide us. By celebrating people that experience different modes of oppression and yet continue to contribute to positive American culture and discourse, we steer away from individual marginalized struggles and move toward intersectional liberation!
